Teleoperator Psychology



Another Willow Garage video, this one discusses a study of the psychology of robot teleoperation.

It would be interesting to see a detailed study of the effects of latency on teleoperator performance. The phase lag induced by the communications link would be one factor that will negatively effect operation, but are there ways of mitigating the effects? Would there be any unexpected results if you plotted the time required to perform a teleoperation task vs. latency?
Has anyone already done this research?

My Masters degree was based on that sort of thing: teleoperation of a robot through the web, where the latency is long & unpredictable. Basically you can handle long delays if you give the robot the ability to drive around by itself, and you simply tell it the places you want to go on a map.

Funnily enough, just like Willow Garage and doing, I also got my robot to recharge itself whenever its batteries were low, by driving back to its battery charger and plugging itself in.
