The original cable for the Hokuyo URG-04LX-UG01 is a clever way of getting more current to the laser without violating the USB power specifications. However since it has a mass of 101 grams, it is obviously disadvantageous for smaller robots.
This Y-Cable weighs a mere 15 grams and is easy to build. Just connect all the grounds and all the power wires, and on one side connect D+ and D-, and leave it disconnected on the other side.
