For service robots of non-trivial size, especially if they are equipped with manipulators, security is going to be even more important than it is for ordinary computing.
If your PC gets compromised the worst that might happen is maybe some privacy violation, data loss or possibly identity theft. If your personal robot get compromised there could be much more serious consequences, such as damage to property, fire hazards and so on. It also only takes one such incident to be widely publicized for the whole industry to lose its reputation and for home insurance companies to penalize anyone using robotics.
This is one of the reasons why I think that the open source approach is going to be important as the service robotics industry grows and capabilities expand. Apart from other things, security issues tend to be found and fixed more rapidly.
The black box data recorder idea is also a good idea, and this might log where the robot has been, who recently accessed it and any changes to the software. Probably there is a potential project there for anyone who wants to create an open standard for legally submissable robotics auditing.
